Deepalaya Learning Centre-Gole Kuan

Slums are necessary evil that accompany industrial areas. Okhla Industrial Area in Delhi is no exception. Gole Kuan is a slum that houses hundreds of daily wage workers who struggle each day to make ends meet. In a scenario where the primary concern is earning enough money to afford a day’s meal, health, hygiene and education can understandably take a back seat.

Deepalaya came across Gole Kuan in 1999 and after seeing lack of educational facilities in the area, decided to open one of its first formal schools right in the heart of the slum. The aim of this project is to provide quality education and hygiene awareness to children who belong to the financially weaker section of the society. Special emphasis was given to girl child education. However, the school has not been converted to a learning center pursuant to applicability of Right to Education Act.
