Deepalaya - Enabling Self-Reliance

Sanjay Colony School was the first to set up a special unit within the school premises for children who are mentally or physically challenged. 33 children attend the lessons which are arranged according to the requirement of these special children. The classes are scheduled for the children at different intervals. Children study different subjects using numerous aids specifically designed to meet each individual’s need. Computer courses have been recently introduced.

The day starts with sports and also between the lessons all kids get time to play. The special education teachers always try to teach with games and fun. Regular trips are made e.g. the whole class was taken to the natural history museum for a week.
An attempt is made to integrate the moderately mentally challenged and physically challenged children into the regular classes.

The mentally challenged children attend vocational training, eg. computers, candle making and paper folding.

Deepalaya also tries to support the children and their families in health issues. Most of the families are too poor to afford good medical attendance. In the school the children are looked after by physiotherapists and other trained doctors.

With all this support Deepalaya tries to give these special children the opportunity of passing their exams and earning some money for them and the family.
