Unique Deepalaya Choral Group draws accolades
The year 2008 marks three decades of Deepalaya's service to society. It also marks half a century of Rtn TK Mathew's service to theunderprivileged. To highlight these two memorable milestones, Deepalaya came up with the idea of launching a Choral group comprising children from our educational institutions.Around 250 Deepalaya students were chosen for this unique venture.Their hard work combined with the dedication of Mr Sunny C Varughese, the choir master (who took up the formidable task of training them), paid off rich dividends in the end. Our children proved they are no less than those coming from privileged backgrounds when the Choir group was launched on 11th October. The children received a standing ovation. The Chief Guest Ms Sheila Dikshit, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi, was so impressed with the Choral group that she committed to give them an opportunity in important events in the City. She also released `Deepalaya
Impacting Lives', a special publication showcasing the difference Deepalaya has made to people's lives in its huge span of existence and service.Ms Danielle Brink-Musters, from Foundation Children of Tomorrow (Netherlands), released the Deepalaya Souvenir on the occasion and expressed a deep satisfaction over her long association with the organization.

Anand Prakash gets the first prize at Inner Wheel competition
Deepalaya's singing stars shine at Inner Wheel competition

Deepalaya children keep coming back with prizes in whatever competitions they participate in. This was confirmed yet again in a competition conducted by Inner Wheel of Rotary Club for NGO-run schools.Twenty students from the four Deepalaya formal schools participated, and twelve of them qualified to the finals, attesting to the availability of the large talent pool in Deepalaya. The students had to show their skills in semi-classical, action-oriented songs. Our students had undergone rigorous training under the gurus assigned to them.Anand Prakash of class twelth won the first prize and a cash reward of Rs 5000.The second and third prizes and cash rewards of Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 went to Archana of tenth class and Preeti Aarti of grade three. Rattan of class ninth picked up the fourth prize. It is indeed a laudable achievement as none of them has had any formal training in music."I couldn't even dream that I will win a prize in the competition. All the participants were singing so well. Many of them had trained professionally", said Archana, who is thankful to Ms Rama Das and Ms Shyamali Das, her music and dance teachers. The day is not far when some of these youngsters would sing their way to glory.

Kisani from Modern High School, Dubai, completely at home for a week at Deepalaya Schools. These boys from affluent families held nothing back and were delighted to forge new bonds of friendship. They grabbed the opportunity to understand how less-privileged children from their own country were getting educated. The objective of their visit was to get insights of how the deprived endeavor to get ahead in life. These boys from secondary and senior secondary grades, who were on a Student Exchange programme with Deepalaya, shared their knowledge and experiences with our children. They variously taught them Science, Maths and Art and Crafts. Chirag, helped them make friendship bands and tie them to their best friends. Dushyant shared many football tricks with the students, who were delighted to learn the same Before leaving for Dubai, the boys shared the experiences they had and how they will do their best to come up to the expectations placed on them. The results of the pilot programme are encouraging. Deepalaya hopes to continue it on a regular, annual basis.

Teachers remembered and Girl Child celebrated
Teachers' Day was celebrated in a unique manner this year with surprises popping up one after the other. EQFI Director, educationist and chief guest Ms Anuaradha Sen delivered words of wisdom as she expressed happiness about the show Deepalaya students and staff put up. The teachers were touched by the traditional welcome, the lunch and the gifts that were given to them. The management, this year, had worked out all the programs in advance, kept them secret and gave the teachers a warm and welcome surprise. A teacher spoke for all of them, thanking the HRC and mentioned that they will remember this for a long time to come.Girl Child Day was also celebrated on September 24 in a meaningful manner. A team from Oriflame graced the event as chief guests. They visited DSSC and inaugurated the Girl Child Wallpaper, a gift by the teachers to the school. This was followed by a skit showing how the Girl Child fights against great odds to come up in life by getting educated. There was another innovative skit on environment. Both were well applauded. A number of children spoke, thanking Deepalaya and Oriflame for their support.
Chhaya for kids
Deepalaya started an innovative institutional care programme on experimental basis to care for its students who come from families in real difficult circumstances. Chhaya, the new residential facility, will take care of 20 children in the first year of operations, which will be funded by Deepalaya. 13 of them, aged 4-16, have been already identified and are being nourished at Chhaya. These children attend classes at Ramditti JRN Deepalaya School in the morning. They are given educational, psychological and cultural support under constant attention and care from the staff at Chhaya.Volunteers with the project (currently 8 of them), have also taken up activities like still and video camera handling, computers, French and English, singing, yoga and many more to see a total growth of the children, and thus preparing them to pursue further education and training if they wish so. The boys follow a strict time table at Chhaya, which allows them to play, study and have fun, all the while learning new professional and life skills. The number of children is deliberately kept small so that personal care and attention is ensured. The pilot project is targeted to become self-reliant by the next year and many Corporates and trusts have been contacted for the same.

Double honors
A real great honor was conferred on Deepalaya when it was chosen to be a member of the UN Global Compact. The members would undertake to advance the `Ten principles of the Global Compact' and also, the larger development goals falling under 'Millennium Development Goals'.Deepalaya will be listed on the UN Global Compact website as a UNGC participant and assist in certain events. The communication from the India office reads in part: "We look forward to your organization joining us at such events and contributing to our collective effort towards a sustainable future for our planet."Deepalaya also takes pride in sharing that Rtn TK Mathew has been unanimously elected the Vice President of International Forum for Child Welfare recently at the World Forum General Assembly held at Cardiff, Wales. This is IFCW's way of acknowledging his contributions to alleviate the suffering of marginalized children.Double honors indeed!

Corporates contribute

Corporates have always stood by us, helping us variously. On the eve of
Independence Day, ninety employees from Hindustan UniLever visited Deepalaya Gram. They played different games with the children, who participated with great enthusiasm. The spontaneous dancing and singing of the children demonstrated their complete involvement. HUL employees were particularly touched by the simple and innocent responses of the children who seemed to relish sheer joy of living. On August 28, Deepalaya and Huawei signed an agreement, under which Huawei will extend a support of Rs 10 lakhs to implement `livelihood generation for the differently-abled' through a new Vocational Training Centre. The collaboration, which is slated to run for three years, would enable Deepalaya train 50 children in the first year of operations. The occasion saw the presence of Ms Sheila Dikshit,Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi and Mr Zhang Yan, the Chinese Ambassador to India.Forty employees from Dell visited Deepalaya Gram on September 25 and engaged the children in a variety of games. Our children had a wonderful time. More importantly, they got a chance to display their skills in the various competitions organized by Dell. Our children won the hearts of Dell employees, who promised to come back soon.
