Learning to Punch
“I am not scared to go alone now, I can fight back,” says a confident Lalita after attending the ten days Self Defence Training Program held in Deepalaya School, Sanjay Colony. Lalita is a differently abled student of Sanjay Colony studying in IV standard. South Delhi project organized this training for seventy adolescent girls of Gole Kuan, Sanjay Colony, Khori and the Special Unit.
The purpose of this training was to empower the girls for protecting themselves against eve- teasing and molestation.
As these girls belong to the slums and have to commute on their own through vulnerable areas.
This training was held in association with Crime against Women (CAW) Cell, Nanakpura. The training was given by two women constables from the cell, Ms. Kunti and Ms. Kanta.

During their training, first they were taught the warming up exercises. It helps in further action. Students were taught various standing positions to attack and also defend themselves. Apart from these, techniques of accumulation of strength in their hands and body were also inculcated. Other skills like punching, fighting position various attacks, blocking skills etc were also taught to them. The duration of the training was ten days. The trained girls demonstrated their acts on the concluding day.
A group song was performed by the girls of Gole Kuan, called “Main Bharat ki Beti Hun” (I am the daughter of India). Ms. Neeta Malhotra, ACP, CAW Cell distributed the certificates to the participants.
