Deepalaya Choral Group – A launch by children from slums and streets
Education does not mean merely reading, writing and performing simple arithmetic. Right? Surely, good education means all round development of a child’s personality with a view to equip him or her with life skills to face future challenges. Co-curricular activities, an essential part of the academic programme of Deepalaya schools ensure harmonious growth and personality development among children. They go a long way in unearthing and unfolding the hidden talent among them and form the core of student life.
Deepalaya explores latent talent in children coming from a marginalized background, builds their confidence and fosters their development. We help them to develop their creative abilities through various competitions and cultural programmes organized in-house and externally. No doubt our students are exceptionally talented and they only need an opportunity to prove themselves. Walk into any Deepalaya school and you will find that colourful bulletin boards, classroom boards and exhibition items on display speak volumes about the abundant talent of our children.
A healthy mind and a healthy body is an ideal balance that is needed in the proper growth of children. Deepalaya ensures that a perfect balance is maintained between academics and sports by providing professional training and sending the children for various competitions. Theatre, singing, dancing, drawing, sports - you name it and our students have excelled in all. Through all these and more our students have honed their soft skills and life skills.

Deepalaya students have already shown their mettle in various co-curricular activities in many competitions and have made outstanding achievements. Komal a student of Class 10 is gearing up for a hat trick…..but not in cricket. A budding artist, she has been felicitated by former President of India Shri APJ Abdul Kalam and very recently by President Smt. Pratibha Singh Patil. Deepalaya School, Kalkaji Extension has a Choir group which has already won two awards – at SWARAM Competition by Marthoma Church Karol Bagh and another one by Kerala Christian Association. These budding musicians were also a part of the famous French Opera, ‘Carmen’ in April 2008. Mr. Francis Wazirag, producer of ‘Carmen’ had this to say about our students, “Deepalaya students were marvellous and quick learners”. More recently the group also participated in the Shakespearean play ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’ under the banner of the popular Akshara Theatre, along with students from other elite public schools. Having won much appreciation for their performance they would now be associated more closely with Akshara Theatre for future productions. Encouraged by the stupendous success of these students, Deepalaya is proud to launch ‘Bal Raagam’ Deepalaya Choral Group in October 2008.
The idea is to build the confidence of these children and provide them a platform to put their best foot forward. The students are from the slums and streets, not English speaking, are culturally and socially different and needless to say marginalized. Yet they are endowed with talent and if challenged they prove no less in comparison with their elite counterparts. Would you like to partner with us in nurturing their talents, creating outstanding artists and performers?
